Orbit’s wood chip division has secured long-term supply contracts with forestry owners, sawmills and logging companies to provide us with high volumes of hardwood timber feedstock. This is then converted at processing facilities into high quality wood chips for biomass, used primarily in electricity generation at power plants.
Wood chips or biomass is of course a renewable energy source since the trees from which it’s produced is replenished by re-planting of the latter when it’s harvested. Due to the fact that carbon dioxide (CO²) is released into the atmosphere during the burning process of the wood chips, this is taken up again and recycled into oxygen by the growing replenished, re-planted trees. Other evident environmental benefits of burning biomass opposed to fossil fuels are low carbon footprints, no harmful sulphur or mercury emissions and minimal nitrogen release. Biomass is a leading source of renewable energy worldwide and it’s estimated that power generation capacity by biomass will increase more than ten-fold by 2050. It has become increasingly difficult for power plant owners to secure dependable long-term supplies of biomass; therefore we offer long-term contracts to supply our wood chips in order to ensure our customers constant, reliable and ongoing supply, this in turn enable us to secure raw material for the long run.
